108 Sun Salutations

108 Sun Salutations with Jamie McLean

The Spring Equinox represents a time of rebirth and new beginnings, making it a great time to detoxify the body. The number 108 is sacred and significant in many ways, appearing in many disciplines from astronomy to yoga:

  • The number 108 appears in ancient, sacred texts. For example, there are 108 Upanishads and 108 Tantras
  • In numerology, 108 equals 9, which symbolizes universal love, eternity and awakening
  • In Ayurveda, there are 108 sacred points on the body
  • In astronomy, the distance between the Sun and Earth is roughly 108 times the Sun’s diameter
  • Mala bead necklaces have 108 beads, which are used to count during meditation

Practicing 108 Sun Salutations is a powerful experience that will stretch you and leave your yoga practice changed. Along with being an incredible way to detox, physically and mentally, it’s a memorable gesture to mark the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

In general, you will better appreciate what you are able to do, and how much further you can exceed your own expectations. This series will challenge your mind as your body continuously moves and flows through the asanas. It’s a rich way to elevate your yoga practice and boost your own mental and physical capacity.

Jamie McLean, ERYT200/RYT500, began practicing yoga in 1995. After moving all over the world and raising 2 delightful young men, she turned her attention to deepening her yoga studies. She completed her 200 hour teacher training in 2010 at Yoga H’Om in Pittsburgh PA, and her advanced 300 hour training in 2016 at Yoga Breeze in Cave Creek AZ. She has had the distinct privilege of studying with several master teachers, including Rodney Yee, Richard Freeman and Tim Miller. Jamie’s classes focus heavily on anatomy and alignment, but are always playful and accessible.
